Full Description
28 June1996. NLA air photography.
Cropmark site consisting of several linear features, none of which can be clearly discerned, some of them may be post medieval field boundaries.
S. Massey (NLA), 17 September 2001.
December 2004. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of an undated and post medieval field system, enclosures and other ditches are visible on aerial photographs (S1-3). The central grid reference for these cropmarks is TG 3293 3330. Some cropmarks previously recorded under this number have been moved to NHER 39110, 39111, 39114 and 39115. The post medieval field pattern shown on the Bacton tithe and enclosure maps of 1845 and 1827 is partly visible as cropmarks (S4-5). A curving ditch extending from north to south between TG 3294 3345 and TG 3297 3329 and a southwest to northeast aligned ditch from TG 3297 3329 to TG 3307 3334 define one of these fields. Other boundaries of this date are aligned northwest to southeast from TG 3299 3328 to TG 3302 3323 and west to east from TG 3279 3328 to TG 3296 3331 and TG 3279 3324 to TG 3285 3324. The last of these ditches, and another which extends north to south between TG 3285 3324 and TG 3283 3308, follow the line of the former parish boundary between Bacton and Edingthorpe. Other ditches and possible fields or enclosures extending to the northwest of Rectory Road are also present. It appears from their alignment that these are broadly related to the same field system. However, they are not marked on the maps examined (S4-5) and are presumably of an earlier date. These ditches include a double ditch between TG 3292 3330 and TG 3296 3319, which may represent a narrow trackway or field boundary. Small enclosures, including one with a possible concentric double ditch, are located by the road at TG 3297 3321. A possible larger enclosure, which is crossed by the possible trackway and smaller enclosures, measures up to 96m by 42m and is centred on TG 3294 3322. Further ditches on a similar alignment are present at TG 3291 3318, TG 3302 3327, TG 3304 3330 and to the southeast of the road at TG 3299 3318. It is clear that several phases of related activity are present among these cropmarks. However the survival of parts of this field system into the 19th century, suggest that it is of post medieval date. Underlying this field system to the north is an earlier, possibly Roman, field system on a different alignment (NHER 39110) with other undated field boundaries present to the west (NHER 39111).
