Full Description
Former site of Gas Works.
April 2000. Site visit.
Proposed development area visited by Lindsey Archaeological Services. A Mesolithic/Neolithic worked flint of unspecified type was found at the base of a hedgebank at the eastern boundary of the site, close to the house at The Grove.
Noted in (S1).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 18 December 2013.
January 2002. Desk-based Assessment.
This assessment identified the potential for this proposed development site to contain archaeologically significant remains. It was however noted that late 19th- and early 20th-century quarrying will have removed any archaeological deposits once present in the northernmost part of the proposed development areas (the Gas Works Pit - see NHER 1145).
See report (S1) for further details.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 18 December 2013.
2002. Trial Trench.
Excavation of single trench in the rear gardens of The Grove - a six house gasworks-related development (now demolished) in the centre of the proposed development area.
No archaeologically significant features or deposits were identified, with this site shown to have been disturbed by several modern pits. No finds recovered.
See report (S2) for further details.
D. Gurney (NLA), 26 March 2002. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 18 December 2013.
2002. Watching Brief
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of new supermarket and petrol station. This work focused on the area to the south of the former quarry pit (NHER 1145).
No archaeologically significant features were recorded, although a number of finds were recovered. These included:
13 undatable prehistoric worked flints, including 12 flakes and 1 retouched flake.
2 Late Mesolithic/Early Neolithic flint blades and 1 flake.
1 undatable late prehistoric pottery sherd.
11 Late Neolithic/Bronze Age flint flakes, 1 flake core and 2 thumbnail scrapers.
4 ?Iron Age pottery sherds.
2 Roman pottery sherds.
6 medieval pottery sherds.
3 undatable pottery sherds.
See report (S3) and list in file for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S4).
D. Robertson (NLA), 18 April 2006. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 18 December 2013.
