Summary

Various prehistoric flints recovered during fieldwalking in 2002. These included a Late Upper Palaeolithic/Mesolithic flint blade, and various Neolithic implements including a discoidal knife, arrowheads, scrapers and a chisel. A Roman pottery sherd was also found.

2002. Fieldwalking.
Various finds recovered from several areas, including a number of prehistoric worked flints.

Found in Area 3 (In field south of NHER 14950 and just north of Pepper Hill Tumulus (NHER 5616), TL 7877 8825 approx.):
1 Late Neolithic discoidal flint knife. Almost circular (diameter 75-80mm) disc of flint with fairly corticated thermal surfaces on both faces and with shallow invasive flaking around most of the perimeter on each face. No polish discernible. Thin greyish patina on the flaked surfaces.
Previously recorded as NHER 37110.

Found in Area 5 (south of area formerly NHER 5622 - now NHER 14950 Context 1):
1 Roman pottery sherd (greyware rim).

Found in Area 6 (between Area 1 and Area 5, TL 7866 8855 approx.):
1 Late Upper Palaeolithic/Mesolithic broken flint blade.
3 Neolithic flint chisel arrowheads, 1 broken flaked axe, 10 scrapers, 1 end-polished chisel, 5 flakes, 1 blade fragment and 3 blade-like flakes.
