Full Description
January 2001. NMP
Three sections of ditch are visible on the 1971 aerial photographs (S1) as earthworks, at TF 6958 4347. Two of the ditches converge at their northern ends and they are both flanked by banks. The ditches are between 50m and 80m long and run towards the watercourse/tank trap (NHER 26707). The two outermost ditches are visible on 1944 aerial photographs (S2) although not as clearly as on the 1971 photographs. As the ditches lie on the golf course, it is possible that they are in fact used as drainage for the course. A recent date is also suggested by the fact that no features are recorded in this location on the historic maps for this area.
A. Hunt (NMP), 23 January 2001.
August 2002. Norfolk NMP.
These banks and ditches seem too complex to be drainage structures. On NMR oblique aerial photographs taken in 2000 (S3), the banks look quite pronounced and flat topped. Also on the RAF aerial photographs from 1944 (S4) the westernmost bank clearly has four small pits cut into it, between 1-2m across. These may have held structures or possibly acted as weapons pits. It therefore seems more likely that these features are part of the World War Two defences in the area.
S. Massey (NMP), 30 August 2002.
