Map

January 2001. NMP.
An arc-shaped section of road, adjoining a main road, can be seen on 1944 aerial photographs (S1) at TF 700 440. Two structures are visible on one of the arms of this section of road. The feature is a military training site, most likely to train tank drivers how to drive through water (the structures could be water tanks) or even to train drivers in how to drive a tank on/off landing craft. A trench (TF 7004 4411) and a bank (TF 7001 4406) can be seen in close proximity to the track and are probably part of the training site. By 1945, the aerial photograph (S2) shows that the larger structure on the track has been removed - suggesting the temporary nature of the site. On the 1971 aerial photograph (S3) the site can be seen to have been built over, although traces of the bank and trench are still visible.
A. Hunt (NMP), 19 January 2001.
