Map

October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
A sinuous flat-topped bank or compacted/worn trackway, visible on 1946 RAF aerial photographs (S1). It is 3m wide and runs from TF 8431 4267 to TF 8441 4262. This leads to an extraction pit at TF 8442 4260, 20m by 33m. To the immediate east of this pit, a scar, 15m wide, of smaller extraction pits and holes can be seen to run across the next field until TF 8457 4247. Two other areas of broken ground and pits are centred on TF 8459 4253 and TF 8448 4252.
To the west of the extraction areas are two linear ditches or slightly hollowed tracks, one from TF 8432 4264 to TF 8432 4251 and another from TF 8432 4254 to TF 8441 4250. This leads to another extraction area marked on the 2nd edition map (1902-7, 25") (S2), now obscured by tress. It seems likely that both the worn linears are related to the movement of material from these extraction areas. The geology appears to be Contorted drift and Norwich Brickearths (S3). So the band of material that is being chased could be brick earth, a good quality clay or gravel.
S. Massey (NMP), 2 October 2002.
