Full Description
February 2001. Norfolk NMP.
A number of narrow, linear cropmarks can be seen in a field around TF 807 443 on 1976 aerial photography (S1). They appear to be representing ditched features. Some of the cropmarks can be firmly attributed to the modern period, such as one running east to west across the field for about 400m, which aligns with a field boundary of the Ordnance Survey 1906 map (S2). Another feature running north to south is also a field boundary, while others appear to be drains. However in the northeast area of the field there are some slightly less regular, linear cropmarks, and three or four dark patches, two of which appear to be pits, while two others may represent the location of buildings/structures. One of the possible structures has ditches on three sides. Some of the other ditches may represent larger enclosures. It seems that there may be some kind of settlement site in the northeast part of this field, which may be of some antiquity.

July 2002. Norfolk NMP.
Area extended to include cropmarks at TF 8059 4444, visible on NLA oblique aerial photographs from 1976 (S1). These may be part of the same site. These consist of several linear and curvilinear features, which may define part of an enclosure. Two rectilinear positive anomalies are visible, the largest is 11m by 7m. These may indicate structures or sunken areas. Also the field boundaries recorded as being on the 2nd edition map (25", 1902-7) (S2) have been removed from the plot. It is possible that some of the linears parallel to these boundaries are also relatively recent and possibly relating to drainage. Further detail has been added to the previously identified area of possible settlement to the northeast of the site, centred on TF 8094 4436. The enclosures may be double ditched or have enclosures set within one another. The largest/outer enclosure appears to define an area at least 120m by 100m. The focus of activity appears to be within the centre of the site, with the rectilinear pit like or sunken structures identified. The morphology of these features and the nearby location of Roman finds (NHER 11317), would suggest that these enclosures and associated features are Roman in date, possibly even with Late Iron Age origins.
A trackway runs across the eastern part of the site from TF 8092 4426 to TF 8090 4435. It does not appear to be directly related to the enclosures as it runs diagonally to the ditches. A parched linear, representing either a bank or compacted routeway, also appears to run from TF 8094 4439 to TF 8086 4440. It is in two sections, possibly cut by one of the main ditches. In addition a possible pit alignment has been identified to the south of the area, running from TF 8094 4422 to TF 8083 4425, with a possible outlier pit 30m to the west. The feature consists of a double line of pits, approximately 15m apart. The pits are mostly slightly elongated in the same direction as the axis of alignment. The pits also vary in size from less than 1m across to up to 11m by 3m. The date and origins of the feature is not clear, no relationship is apparent between it and any other elements of the site.
S. Massey (NMP), 12 July 2002.
