Full Description
July 2002. Norfolk NMP.
A small square structure and ditch of unknown, but probably post medieval date, are located on the Scolt Head saltmarsh. These features are possibly associated with a saltmarsh industry/activity. However the structures are visible on 1946 RAF photography (S1) and it is possible that they date to World War Two activity on the saltmarsh.
A small square, roofless structure is located at TF 8183 4620, visible on RAF aerial photographs taken in 1946 (S1) and 1952 (S2). It measures approximately 3m across. To the north west of this is 12m long ditch or trench, 0.5m wide, running from TF 8181 3420 to TF 8181 4521.
S. Massey (NMP), 16 July 2002.
May-November 2004. Norfolk Rapid Coastal Zone Archaeological Survey.
Inter-tidal survey (Environmental Zone 8), Context 974:
A scatter of three sections of brick wall, ten fragments of loose brick, along with a short section of ditch, were recorded in an area of dunes (between TF 81812 46220 and TF81830 46204). The bricks appear to be handmade and lime mortar has been used as the bonding material. The warden of Scolt Head Island suggested that the sections of wall came from a warrener's cottage.
See assessment report (S3) for further details.
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.421).
J. Allen (NLA), 18 April 2005. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 21 July 2019.
