Summary

Irstead House is an early 19th century house with a later 19th century south wing (No 2) and north extensions. The main part is of yellow brick, partially painted, with masonry dressings and a slate roof. The olderst block has two bays in two storeys, and the later wing has two storeys and an attic in three bays. Early block has a large late 19th century cast iron staircase.

Early 19th century house with later 19th century south wing (no 2) and north extensions.
Yellow brick part painted, masonry dressings, slate roof. T-plan; older block two bays two storeys, later wing two storeys and attic, three bays. South front has central door and porch with semi-circular arch, below a pierced stone balcony. Sash windows with Italianate arches. Heavy brick eaves cornice continuing over semi-circular dormers. Central belvedere with scroll buttresses. Early block has large late 19th century cast iron staircase. West room with Ionic columns and plaster cornice.

(S2) includes old drawing which indicates that below the south doorway was an arched door presumably to basements (the house is on a hillslope) with balustrade rising above, forming feature with the porch and balcony.
Garden to south built over in mid 20th century.
