August/September 2002. Metal detecting.
A Roman copper alloy brooch was recovered while metal detecting. The find was identified as a headstud brooch (damaged) with the stump of a forward hook, dated to the 2nd century AD. The brooch has steeped semi-circular wings, a perforated lug for (missing) spring, an internal stud with ring-and-dot at the head of the bow above a longitudinal panel with a counter-relief voided lozengiform pattern, a broken catch-plate on reverse and a half-round button foot. It measures 18 by 50mm (at least). The brooch has no close parallel in Hattat (S1).
