Summary

An archaeological evaluation in 2002 in advance of proposed redevelopment excavated a single trench. This revealed gravel natural overlaid by an undated dark soil, interpreted as representing pasture or water meadow. This was overlain by medieval levelling deposits from which a single sherd of residual Middle Saxon pottery was recovered. A possible Late medieval tanning pit cut these deposits. The medieval sequence was overlain by post medieval garden soils and pits.

December 2002. Trial Trench.
Evaluation of proposed redevelopment site. Contexts 1-40 used.
A single trench was excavated which revealed gravel natural overlaid by an undated dark soil, interpreted as representing pasture or water meadow. This was overlain by medieval levelling, or make-up deposits from which a single sherd of residual Middle Saxon pottery was recovered. A possible late medieval tanning pit cut these deposits. The medieval sequence was overlain by post-medieval garden soils and pits.

September 2003. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of adjacent Hi-Tech House site.
Areas of high archaeological potential were identified along the Blackfriars Street frontage and within the car park area, with good preservation expected in these areas. It is possible that the line of the Late Saxon defences ran along Blackfriars Street. Areas further from the street frontages were considered to be of medium archaeological potential, with a lower density of occupation expected in these areas, similar to that revealed by the evaluation trench (see above).
See (S3) for further information.

July 2010. Desk-based Assessment.
Impact assessment of proposed development area comprising this site and the adjacent Hi-Tech House site (NHER 55569).
Conducted that these two areas are very similar in character, being reclaimed land that was not occupied until the medieval period.
See (S4) for further details, including the results of a geotechnical survey.
