March 2007. Excavation. From Context 100.
A wall uncovered during the excavation was almost certainly part of a separate building, known from previous drainage operations in 2002 and likely to be of medieval date. A layer of possible foundation material, which may once have supported the wall of the south aisle of the church, was also revealed. Finds recovered during this excavation included two body sherds, one a glazed fragment of late medieval transitional ware and another a sherd of early medieval pottery. Nine fragments of ceramic building material were recovered, including at least two fragments of Roman tile, a possible medieval floor tile and some late medieval to early post medieval brick. Fragments of disarticulated human bone were recovered, and were reburied. Two pieces of lead (probably from the church roof or guttering) were recorded, along with an S-shaped iron rod, possibly a fitting of some kind, from a single context. Two fragments of clear window glass were also recovered, and may be of medieval date.
See final report (S3), assessment report (S4) and summary in (S5) for further details. See also (S6) and (S7).
