Full Description
March 2003-March 2005.
Evaluation of proposed redevelopment area in 2003, following by archaeological monitoring and targeted excavation during site clearance and construction work in 2005 (Area E).
In one trench the earliest deposit consisted of undated sands, maybe natural formations or part of saltern mounds. This was overlaid and cut by a structure foundation and associated floor layers with a suggested 12th-15th century date.
Another trench revealed a 13th-14th century cobbled surface, 16th century domestic dumping pits and possible boundary plots, a post medieval well and residual medieval pottery.
Another trench uncovered a brick culvert of possible 16th-17th century date with a corner of a 17th century brick structure built over the culvert.
A worked medieval timber object, probably a brace for the legs of a stool, was retrieved from a sediment sequence which was overlain/cut by part of a possible medieval building (based on the use of limestone as wall material) which in turn was truncated by a sequence of undated pits.
Two medieval ditches and a large undated ditch were also found.
See published monograph (S1) for full details. See also evaluation report (S2) and assessment report (S3). The results of this work are also summarised in (S4) and (S5).
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2013.164 and NWHCM : 2013.165).
