Map

Listed as 'pair of cottages one occupied by [1] immediately south of Lower Cottages'.
It is the latter that makes identification possible as the appearance of these changed. Listed as 17th century, plastered, steep gabled roof; one storey and attic; two dormers; two casements with shutters, two simple doors, central roof; one storey and attic; two dormers; two casements with shutters, two simple doors, central stack.
(S1) show this is now one house, only one door with new porch; rear outshut. Stack is offcentre but this was probably always the case, as the plan indicates a three cell layout with wall between hall and services removed; possible cross passage plan.
See (S2).
E. Rose (NLA), 25 March 2003.

(S3) notes that the name Pepyrs was given in 1982 on the basis of the will of John Cowall, rector of St Michaels, who in 1509 left a house of that name for charitable purposes. As the building was known as Cowall’s Charity and belonged to the churchwardens until 1982 it was assumed it was the same building. However (S3) agreed with (S2) that the building was 17th century, indeed nearer 1700 than 1500. The 1982 renovation removed all original features.
(S3) believed that if this is the site of Pepyrs then the house must have been rebuilt around 1700.
(S4) in file gives details and description before alteration.
E. Rose (NLA), 28 November 2006.
