Summary

A World War Two spigot mortar emplacement is recorded by documentary sources as having stood at this approximate location. Field visits have failed to identify its site. A small structure visible to the southwest of the documented location, on aerial photographs taken in 1946, could equate to the emplacement but this is uncertain.

A small structure visible on aerial photographs (S2), at TG 4021 1046, could equate to the World War Two spigot mortar emplacement described above. Not only, however, is there a discrepancy between the location of this structure and the grid reference given for the site in documentary sources (see (S3), the location of the structure – surrounded by houses and at a distance from both roads – would seem to be counterproductive for a fixed defence. Its interpretation is therefore uncertain at present. (The polygon defining the limits of the site takes in both possible locations.)
