Summary

In 1944 digging for gravel in this area discovered an iron sword on top of the chest of a human skeleton. This burial was felt to date to sometime before 200 BC. According to local rumours the finder of the sword had also found 'a silver snuffbox and a jewelled ring' at the same time which he had concealed and sold. It is possible that these items were misidentified Iron Age objects. Metal-detecting in 1998 recovered
