Map

1966. During building operations in a cut section.
At a depth of about 1.2m (3 feet) below modern ground surface C. G. Rye discovered a layer of large flint cobbles and oyster shells which was 50 yards south of The Conge. Among them was part of a mortar of Paris Basin Limestone, a few broken greyware sherds dating to the 12th to 13th centuries and part of a red ware base, probably 14th century. Also a possible pottery counter. This was thought to be either the edge of a Row, probably Row 30, or a yard. This mortar from the Paris basin is the second reported from Great Yarmouth.

In box in GYM with this site number and grid reference is medieval coarse ware, post medieval sherds, Dutch tiles. Box labelled 'Rows 27-30'.
E. Rose (NAU), November 1982.

Source [2] in letter to A. Rogerson (NLA), December 1992 states that mortar was at 5.25m (17.5 feet) above Ordnance Datum lying on sand layer with thin dark lines in it. However date of finding is given as August 1950 - source given as 'Rumbelow's Diaries'.
Which is correct? [2] says mortar was given to Norwich Museum 'at least temporarily'. Was it unaccessioned in the museum from 1950 to 1966?
E. Rose (NLA), 7 January 1993.
