Full Description
January 2003. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks are within the centre of the area covered by finds scatter NHER 22391. The features are visible as light coloured soilmarks within a freshly ploughed field (S1). The enclosure (centre TF 5968 2099) is aligned with its long axis in a southeast to northwest direction, with a minimum length of 102m and a width of 62m. The enclosure is defined by a bank with a maximum width of 10m, although the bank material may have been spread by the plough. The northern side of the enclosure appears to be formed by two different lengths of bank, on slightly different alignments. There is a straight linear bank running from the western side of the enclosure (TF 5964 2099) towards the northwest (TF 5946 2111) for a length of 210m.
The date of the enclosure is uncertain. The feature is positioned behind the medieval Sea Bank (NHER 2187), and probably also on the landward side of an earlier course of the Sea Bank. The feature is not in alignment with the modern field boundaries, which might also suggest an early date. The enclosure may pre date the Sea Bank and represent a saltmarsh stock enclosure or defended site, or simply a post bank enclosure or field. The enclosure could be any date from later prehistory to medieval, as the few medieval sherds recovered are unlikely to be significant.
M. Brennand (NMP), 17 January 2003.
