Map

April 2003. Norfolk NMP.
These features are only possibly the result of the salt production process, and may equally be natural sand formations, accumulated on the edge of the former saltmarsh.
These photographs (S1) are the only images consulted upon which these features appear. The group comprises of three amorphous or floriform areas of light coloured soil or cropmark (S1). The westernmost feature (centre: TF 5924 2311) has an irregular, boot shape in plan, and is uncharacteristically large, with a northwest to southeast length of 250m. The easternmost two features (centres: TF 5938 2308 and TF 5950 2311) are irregular to sub rounded in plan, with maximum east to west dimensions of 91m and 128m. To the immediate south of these features is a 145m length of bank (TF 5944 2309 to TF 5933 2301) aligned in an approximate northeast to southwest direction (S1).
These features are situated approximately 280m to the north of the Sea Bank (NHER 2187), which may actually be a medieval feature, rather than late Saxon, at this point. The features therefore probably post date the Sea Bank and pre date the post medieval Sea defences to the north. The length of bank may represent one of a series of successive reclamation advances northwards across the saltmarsh, in turn dictating the location of the saltern mounds to its immediate north. If these features are saltern mounds, they are likely to be late medieval in date.
M. Brennand (NMP), 1 April 2003.
