Full Description
October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
The group consists of five mounds (S1) centred on TF 6269 2371, TF 6270 2390, TF 6283 2385, TF 6290 2395 and TF 6295 2395. The northern three features are sub-rounded in plan, and are situated within the meanders along the former course of a saltmarsh channel. They vary in diameter from 26m to 47m. The southern most feature is also sub-rounded in plan, with a maximum diameter of 95m. The central feature is elongated or even linear, with a wider, sub-rounded western end. The feature has a maximum east to west length of 215m. This feature may simply follow the course of a saltmarsh channel, but may also have been deliberately positioned to provide some form of sea or flood defence. Equally it may post-date the salterns and actually be a post-medieval sea defence bank, although the slightly amorphous, irregular appearance of the feature might suggest that this is not the case, and it is primarily a saltern mound.
These features form part of a dense concentration of saltern mounds located along the saltmarsh in North and South Wootton. Direct dating evidence is scarce but isolated finds of pottery would suggest that the majority of the mounds are medieval in date.
M. Brennand (NMP) 21 October 2002.
