Map

October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
The group consists of six mounds (S1) centred on TF 6269 2341, TF 6281 2352, TF 6285 2346, TF 6281 2344, TF 6283 2387 and TF 6278 2333. The features are elongated and sub-rounded to irregular in plan, ranging in length from 55m to 115m. The mounds are orientated in a variety of directions, and were probably originally situated along the edges of saltmarsh channels. The southernmost and northernmost mounds were large enough to be recorded with 5m contours by the Ordnance Survey (S2).
These features form part of a dense concentration of saltern mounds located along the saltmarsh in North and South Wootton. Direct dating evidence is scarce but isolated finds of pottery would suggest that the majority of the mounds are medieval in date.
M. Brennand (NMP), 22 October 2002.
