Aerial photographs taken in 1946 and 1983 show the cropmarks of four probable medieval salterns. A number of pits were also noted on the photographs for this area, and these may also have dated to the medieval period.

Map

October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
There are four distinct mounds within the group (S1 and S2), although they may have originally only formed three mounds centred on TF 6311 2373, TF 6319 2368 and TF 6319 2359.
The northern mound is sub-rounded in plan, with a diameter of 60m. The central features within the group are two linear mounds that may have originally formed a characteristically horseshoe shaped saltern. The southernmost mound is sub-rounded in plan and is extremely large, with a north to south length of 130m and a width of 90m. Part of this mound survived as an earthwork even after being ploughed, and was recorded as an isolated 5m contour by the Ordnance Survey (S3) during the twentieth century. There is a sub-rectangular pit or feature at the centre of this mound which may represent the site of a structure, contemporary with or post-dating the saltern.
These features form part of a dense concentration of saltern mounds located along the saltmarsh in North and South Wootton. Direct dating evidence is scarce but isolated finds of pottery would suggest that the majority of the mounds are medieval in date.
M. Brennand (NMP) 22 October 2002.
