Full Description
October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
The group consists of five mounds (S1) centred on TF 6253 2294, TF 6258 2293, TF 6261 2292, TF 6262 2287 and TF 6267 2291. The mounds are sub-rectangular to sub-rounded in plan, ranging in length/diameter from 35m to 45m. The Post-medieval sea defence bank NHER 5528 passes through the centre of the group and appears to truncate the eastern side of the westernmost mound. However, it seems unlikely that the mounds were used as a quarry for the bank, as three of these mounds are probably marked by 5m contours on the Second Edition Ordnance Survey (S2), suggesting they survived as visible earthworks into the twentieth century.
These features form part of a dense concentration of saltern mounds located along the saltmarsh in North and South Wootton. Direct dating evidence is scarce but isolated finds of pottery would suggest that the majority of the mounds are medieval in date.
M. Brennand (NMP) 24 October 2002.
May and August 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development area to east of Estuary Farm.
This survey identified no obvious traces of these probable saltern mounds. It is though noted that the survey was hampered by the presence of 'green waste' in these fields, which was associated with a dense spread of magnetic disturbance. Visualised LiDAR data for the site (reproduced in a report for subsequent trial trenching) indicates that the majority of these features do still survive as low earthworks.
Information from draft report. See NHER 68891 for further details.
