Civil Parish SOUTH WOOTTON, WEST NORFOLK, NORFOLK

Map

October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
The mound is sub-rounded to horseshoe shaped in plan (S1), with a maximum diameter of 95m. The material may have accumulated around the site of a structure or saltcote although none is visible on the aerial photograph.
The feature forms part of a dense concentration of saltern mounds located along the saltmarsh in North and South Wootton. The mound was probably originally situated along the edge of a meandering saltmarsh channel. Direct dating evidence is scarce, but isolated finds of pottery would suggest that the majority of the mounds are medieval in date.
M. Brennand (NMP), 25 October 2002.
