Map

June 2003. Norfolk NMP.
There is an elongated or linear mound visible running alongside the western side of bank NHER 5528. The mound has a surviving north to south length of 220m and a width of 40m (S1), although the mound may have been severely truncated or altered from its original form. It is presumed that this is a medieval saltern mound, later incorporated into the line of sea bank NHER 5528. The mound may in itself be the eastern part of a larger mound NHER 27905, to the immediate west, although, although they have been recorded under separate NHER numbers. It cannot be ruled out that this mound accumulated on the western side of the sea bank, after its construction, suggesting it is Post-medieval in date and that salt production continued into the Post-medieval period in this area. It is suggested that this is not the case, and this mound belongs with a larger group of probable medieval saltern mounds occupying the saltmarsh to the east.
M. Brennand (NMP), 1 July 2003.
