Summary

A pair of probable medieval saltern mounds visible as earthworks on 1947 RAF vertical aerial photographs. A topographical survey undertaken in 2018 confirmed the survival of a low mound associated with the southernmost of these features, which subsequent trial trenching confirmed was likely to comprise silt filtration waste from salt production. No dating evidence was recovered but other saltern mounds in the immediate vicinity have now been shown to be associated with Late Saxon to early medieval industial activity.

Map

June 2003. Norfolk NMP.
Two low irregular to sub-rounded mounds are visible (S1) centred on TF 6272 2126 and TF 6275 2122. The mounds have maximum lengths or diameters of 73m and 88m. These are almost certainly medieval saltern mounds, formed by piles of waste sand during salt processing. They are part of a large group of mounds on the former saltmarsh to the east and north of King’s Lynn.
M. Brennand (NMP), 24 June 2003.

February 2018. Earthwork Survey and Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site to north of Greenpark Avenue.
The southernmost of these two earthwork mounds fell within the proposed development area. An initial topographical survey confirmed a low earthwork mound still survived, with subsequent trial trenching confirming that it was indeed likely to comprise filtration waste from salt production. As only a small part of the mound was investigated no associated features were uncovered and no dating evidence recovered. Later work at this site did though demonstrate that several of the other salterns in the vicinity were associated with Late Saxon to early medieval salt industries.
See NHER 66860 for further details.
