Summary

In 2003 four possible timber posts were discovered, located around a test pit dug in 1999. Erosion since 2003 has demonstrated that they are not timber posts, but instead are roots embedded in the peat beds.

Location

Map sheet TF74NW
Civil Parish HOLME NEXT THE SEA, WEST NORFOLK, NORFOLK

February to March 2003. NAU survey.
Four timber posts. Seven pieces of what appeared to be natural wood were observed close by. These may have been associated with the posts, but could have been part of the local peat formation.
A roughly square-shaped cut feature located centrally within the posts was a test pit dug during work in 1999.
J. Allen (NLA), 23 April 2003.

September 2003. Site visit.
Area of monument had a covering of sand and seaweed over top of peat.
One of the four posts was observed. Other pieces may have been lost or they may have been covered by sand.
Some erosion of the peat has taken place since July, along with deposition of layers of sand and shingle.
D. Robertson (NAU), 21 October 2003.

May 2006.
The square feature is 'Hole 1' as shown on (S1).
Erosion has shown the four posts to be natural roots within peat bed. They are not part of an archaeological feature.
D. Robertson (NLA), 25 May 2006.
