NHER 26929 (Cropmark and Earthwork) - Probable post medieval land reclamation features

Four reasonably large areas of linear ditch like features are visible on the Hunting Survey 1969 (S1)-(S2) and Ordnance Survey 1972 (S3) aerial photographs. They look much like ridge and furrow, but are actually made up of short lengths of ditch. These four areas are centred at NGR TF7142 4427, TF7119 4415, TF7091 4396 and TF7135 4407. The area centred at TF7135 4407 is substantially larger than the other areas being approximately 200m by 300m, while the others are all nearer 150m by 100m. An additional fifth area, that is slightly smaller, can be seen to the east and south of the others; it is located at TF7152 4389 and is about 110m by 90m. As well as these, there is a linear feature, which is made up of series of lengths of parallel double ditches. These appear to flow on from each other across the whole area (and these lie in between the individual areas of ditches). These run from NGR TF7129 4421 to TF7124 4407, TF7122 440 to TF7106 4389, TF7101 4388 to TF7086 4387 and TF7086 4386 to TF7078 4376. This double ditched feature continues as a cropmark to the west running from NGR TF7071 4380 to TF7043 4396. It is possible that it comprises some form of trackway (though this is not certain).
It seems likely that together all these features make up part of a post medieval attempt at land reclamation. The whole site is centred on about NGR TF7120 4403. (It is located behind one sea bank yet in front of another).
