Summary

Sections of bank, showing as earthworks and cropmarks, are visible on ADAS 1970 and HSL 1969 aerial photographs. They would suggest the remains of a track or road and appear to coincide with the line of the ‘Lower Way to Thornham’ a track or road shown on 17th, 18th and 19th century maps of Holme next the Sea (also see NHER 1299).

Civil Parish HOLME NEXT THE SEA, WEST NORFOLK, NORFOLK

Map

THIS SITE IS PART OF NHER 1299.

Road marked on T. Nelson's map of 1609 (S1).

May 2002. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of earthworks are visible (S2)-(S4). These would seem to suggest the remains of a track/road and are on the approximate alignment of the linear feature/bank/road recorded previously as NHER 1299. They are located between TF7101 4334 and TF7116 4335, and TF7127 4339 and TF7151 4343 and also coincide with the line of the ‘Lower Way to Thornham’ a track/road shown on an 18th century map - Holme next the Sea - from ‘Home Field’ (S5) (also shown as road on the 1827 enclosure map (S6)). Thus suggesting that this track is a part of NHER 1299.
H. Clare (NMP), 8 May 2002.
