Full Description
Before 8 May 2003. Casual find.
Fragment of post medieval copper alloy lamp. Originally cast in three pieces, base and handle missing. The surviving upper part is cast in the form of the head of a satyr (36mm by 66mm), with a large hole for oil in the forehead and a smaller hole for the wick at the tip of the elongated chin. There is a small suspension loop between the satyr's lower lip and the wick hole. A slight rectangular projection from the top of the head has file marks and traces of solder from the attachment of the handle. The lamp is probably an 18th/19th century copy or pastiche in the manner of a classical original.
