Full Description
July 2002. Norfolk NMP.
The system is formed by both north to south and east to west aligned linear features, to either side of Chalk Pit Road. The individual linear features appear to be excessively wide, although this is probably due to the dark fills of the ditches being spread by the plough. The features are extensive, ranging from 185m to 900m in length, and forming enclosed areas measuring from 95m X 135m to 160m X 300m, presuming they are all contemporaneous. It is probable that the features are all part of one system, suggesting that they pre-date Chalk Pit Road. The features appear to align with existing field boundaries to the north and east and one of the ditches follows the line of the Dersingham/Ingoldisthorpe parish boundary. This system may be of any date but a Late medieval or Post-medieval date seems most likely.
There is an additional, partially double ditched curvilinear feature visible running from the north-western corner of the site towards the south-east (TF 6905 3232 to 6935 3197). The feature has a recorded length of approximately 475m. This feature is more ephemeral than the field boundaries and does not appear to be contemporary with them. This may be an earlier trackway or land boundary.
M. Brennand (NMP), 6 August 2003.
