Summary

An aerial photograph of this site from 1944 records the presence of a series of regularly laid out, densely spaced hut or tent bases, with associated curved profile and rectangular buildings. It would seem likely that this represents the site of a temporary camp, and that the structures are raised tent bases. The site already appears to be abandoned by the end of 1944, and it is possible that the site was used for temporary housing of personnel whilst training during 1944. The site may have been used as a temporary prisoner of war camp during World War Two, but the size and density of the structures and the absence of any visible fencing suggest that this is unlikely.

Map

August 2002. Norfolk NMP.
The site appears as a sub-rectangular loop of road, with two elongated rectangular buildings on the western side and two curved profile buildings on the northern side, next to the road (S1). There is a single curved profile building on the southern side and two curved profile buildings on an area of hard standing within the area encircled by the road. Within the remains of the interior of the site are 159, relatively small square structures or disturbed areas of ground. Each structure measures approximately 5m X 5m, and is laid out on a regular grid arrangement, with a series of probable interconnecting pathways between the squares, with a short stretch of pathway leading off to each structure. It is not possible to determine whether these are actually hard standing or concrete structures and pathways or merely areas of parching and dead grass, although the former seems most likely. There is no visible wire fence or defensive emplacement surrounding the site.
