Full Description
August 2001. Norfolk NMP.
There is a large ditch or channel running in an east to west direction across the southern part of the field. There appears to be the traces a bank on the northern and southern sides of this ditch. A large channel or ditch runs from this feature into the River Ingol, to the north. A second east to west aligned ditch and bank runs in a less regular line parallel with the river further to the north. There are numerous ditches and lengths of bank within the environs of the river presumably relating to drainage but possibly representing the traces of water meadows. Numerous large depressions and the uneven ground surface in the east of the area suggest the location of extraction pits.
All of these features are likely to be late medieval or post medieval in date. While they may simply represent drainage and land boundary features the features closer to the river may represent some form of water management and water meadow type action. Some of these features are marked on the Ordnance Survey 1902 to 1907 revision (S3).
M. Brennand (NMP), 16 August 2001.
