Summary

Aerial photographs from 1952 and 1967 record the cropmarks of a possible Late Iron Age or Roman enclosure and linear features. These probably represent part of the extensive Roman period settlement within the Snettisham environs.

Map

July 2002. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks are ephemeral, although they almost certainly represent archaeological features. There appears to be an approximately rectangular enclosure, with its long axis aligned approximately north to south and with an internal area of 43m X 37m (S1). There are linear features running from the enclosure to the north, south, east and west suggesting the enclosure is part of or is incorporated within a larger field system. Within the enclosure is what appears to be the partial remains of a large ring ditch or sub-rounded enclosure, with a maximum diameter of 30m. There is one linear feature visible within the confines of the rounded enclosure (S2). It cannot be ascertained whether the two enclosures are contemporaneous, but this seems unlikely.
The cropmarks are situated at an elevation of approximately 5m, on the first raised land north of the saltmarsh. There are Roman Period finds in the field to the immediate south and it seems probable that these features also represent part of the extensive Roman period settlement within the Snettisham environs.
