Summary

A Late Saxon refuse pit containing pottery fragments and oyster shells was found during works to build a new office in 1955. Also found were the footings of a medieval wall and an associated burnt layer that may relate to a fire in 1272. Fragments of 15th and 16th century pottery were found in the topsoil.

Upper Close, in digging footings for new offices (71a):
Late Saxon refuse pit to depth of 3m (10 feet) below modern ground surfaces, containing pottery and oyster shells.
Footing of medieval chalk wall associated with burnt layer containing fired daub (from the fire in 1272?).
15th to 16th century pottery in topsoil.
