Map

July 2003. Norfolk NMP.
The feature is only visible for one straight stretch, as three separate lengths, although these were almost certainly one single feature originally (S1). The feature has a total recorded length of 500m, although the original course may have continued to the north and south. It is suggested that this is the line of a former earthwork bank, although it may be the line of track or even a ditch (with a bank to one side).
This possible bank is a bit of an enigma. It does not instantly fit into the system of sea defence banks in this area, and there is no record of the feature on available maps. Nor do the field boundaries or saltmarsh channels appear to have been effected by its course. It is possible that this is an earlier line of bank NHER 26632 (which lies to the immediate east) or it is a localised flood defence measure which post-dates NHER 26632. It is possible that this is a medieval or pre-medieval feature, relating to early sea defence on the saltmarsh, although it is suggested that this is not the case.
M. Brennand (NMP), 11 July 2003.
