Summary

An undated linear feature consisting of a ditch with a bank on either side, is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs of this area. This may be a major land boundary feature that separated the river valley bottom from the fields on the valley sides but it seems more likely to be the former course of the River Burn.

Civil Parish BURNHAM THORPE, WEST NORFOLK, NORFOLK

Map

May 2002. Norfolk NMP.
The feature appears to be caused by a ditch, with an apparently large bank on each side. The feature meanders slightly, and is aligned in an approximate northwest to southeast direction. There are two narrow, linear features running at right angles to the larger feature, that may be drains, boundary features or even associated with the use of the land as a sports field.

This may be a major land boundary feature that separated the river valley bottom from the fields on the valley sides but it seems more likely to be the former course of the River Burn. It may be the result of anthropogenic canalisation or entirely natural in origin.
M. Brennand (NMP), 17 May 2002.
