Full Description
March 2002. Norfolk NMP.
A series of east to west and north to south aligned linear features are visible (S1), almost certainly representing former land divisions or field boundaries. The cropmarks have a lighter, parched appearance suggesting they represent banks, although there may a reversal within the crop, and they may in fact be ditches. The southernmost feature appears as a ditch in 1946 (S2) although the remaining features are not visible as cropmarks. The major north to south feature (TF 8505 4272 to TF 8507 4250) is visible for a length of 250m. A line of relatively dispersed trees is recorded on the line of this feature in 1891 (S3), suggesting the last remnants of what was a substantial and antiquated feature. The date of these features is unknown, but they are likely to date from the historical period.
To the south is a southwest to northeast aligned linear feature (TF 8503 4239 to TF 8520 4260) that appears to pre date the current field alignments. The southern end of the feature is a water filled drain in 1946 (S2) but this does not necessarily disprove the antiquity of the feature. The feature is on the same axis as a single linear within site NHER 1788, to the immediate northeast, which may also hint at an earlier system of land division.
