Full Description
June 2002. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks are located to the immediate north-east of the site of St. Peter’s Priory, (NHER 1774) and may represent medieval structural remains.
There is an extensive parchmark, probably representing a levelled bank (S1), running for a minimum recorded distance of 62m in an approximate north to south direction (from TF 86061 42979 to TF 86050 43041). The feature then turns at a right angle and runs for a minimum recorded distance of 46m towards the east (to TF 86094 43047). This may represent the north-west corner of an extensive enclosure or precinct boundary. There is also a fragmentary right-angled length of narrow bank that is unlikely to be contemporary with the larger feature.
To the south-east, within the hypothesised enclosure, are a series of thin, linear parch marks that may be caused by buried walls or structures. There are fragmentary linear features aligned in north to south and east to west directions. One of the east to west linears has shorter lengths of linear running southwards from its ends, potentially forming three sides of a rectilinear structure. These may be the remains of outbuildings related to the Priory or Hospital, although there is an equal possibility that they are later in date.
