Map

July 2002. Norfolk NMP.
The straight part of the feature is formed by two parallel ditches (S1 and S2), aligned in a southwest to northeast direction, with a minimum recorded length of 123m (from TF 89200 44074 to TF 89284 44171). The ditches are 7m apart. At the northern end the eastern ditch curves round to the east and then southwards, in a relatively smooth arc. The western ditch turns to the west, and then to the northwest in straighter lengths, before it adjoins a marsh channel.
The feature appears to be a track or droveway, although the splaying ditches at the northern end are curious. The eastern arm is certainly an excavated ditch, and not simply a natural meandering channel. The western arm is less uniform in profile and part of it may have a natural origin. The purpose of the feature is unclear. It may be associated with the pillboxes and fixed defences (NHER 12654 and 32418) although it may equally be associated with post medieval land allotment and stock management.
M. Brennand (NMP), 1 July 2002.
