Map

Water tower. Tall red brick structure.
Converted to prospect tower around 1980s with glazed top.
(S1), apparently quoting (S2), states that this was erected in World War Two to service defence installations along the coast. However, it appears on the 1939 Ordnance Survey 25 inch map (S3) and another early 20th century map (details not know, seen briefly) shows the tower and a large building but no houses nearby, suggesting a pre 1930s date. (S4) states that it is indeed not a World War Two feature, the story probably being generated by the proximity of NHER 26714, water training facility.
Could this then be a Great War structure, or is it of non-military origin?
Not visited by E. Rose (NLA).
E. Rose (NLA), 25 November 2003.
