Full Description
Raised earth mount northwest-southeast parallel to river, north of spring.
Six paces in width, length not measured but considerable, under grass.
Erosion by river has formed cliff 1m high in which is revealed the southwest corner of a building; the wall running east visible for 1.70m ends at brick quoins at river end, apparently an offset as there is a section of rubble 7.4m long then another set of quoins, formed of two reused and carved blocks of limestone. To the north of this is a flint and brick wall exposed for 1.2m then visible on surface for five paces. Where interior exposed, a mass of rubble and bricks; one brick with diagonal skintling, probably 18th century but reaminder are later 19th century with little frogs.
Mound is visible on NAU air photos (S1), AEF in particular shows outline of small oblong on top of mound which may be this building, as well as a line across the mound further northwest.
It is said that a map of 1838 shows three cottages here (S2).
The limestone blocks are probably from Coxford priory.
See photographs (S3) in file.
