Summary

Two large shallow mounds (this site and NHER 39794) were examined during a watching brief in 2003. The possible remains of hearths towards the centres of both mounds suggested that they were built as raised platforms for use in times of serious flooding, perhaps for livestock. The remains of possible post holes beneath both mounds could indicate a structural element predating them. These features are also visible on aerial photos.

Map

August 2003. Watching Brief.
Work undertaken during construction of new flood defences along the western bank of the River Yare (Broadland Flood Alleviation Project - Compartment 11).
Two large shallow mounds (this site and NHER 39794) situated along the west bank of Yare were examined in detail and appeared to be of a similar construction. Both were built in two phases and consisted of dumps of re-deposited natural clays. At the centre of both mounds were the probable remains of hearths associated with the first phase of construction. This could indicate that the mounds were simply raised platforms, possibly for stock during times of serious flooding. The features observed beneath both mounds consisted of the probable remains of post holes possibly associated with drainage.
Finds recovered included a prehistoric worked flint and small quantities of Late Saxon, medieval and post-medieval pottery.
See report (S1) for further details.
The archive associated with this work has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.129).

April 2007. Norfolk NMP.
An earthwork mound, possibly a medieval saltern mound or post medieval drainage mill mound, is visible on aerial photographs (S2). The grid reference for this earthwork has been corrected from TG 4387 0243 to TG 4385 0241. It has an irregular plan and lies immediately to the north of the River Yare. It is possible that it relates to a post medieval drainage mill or pump as previously suggested. Alternatively it may be a medieval saltern mound. Other similar mounds are located in the vicinity (NHER 49344-6).
J. Albone (NMP), 19 April 2007.
