Summary

Linear, rectilinear and curvilinear ditches and clusters of pits or post holes are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. None of the features is precisely datable or interpretable, but they are all located in close proximity to a Neolithic cursus (NHER 18190), Neolithic or Bronze Age round barrows (NHER 11685 and NHER 38477), a Neolithic or Bronze Age enclosure (NHER 38478) and an Iron Age square barrow (NHER 38475). This clear evidence of prehistoric ceremonial or funerary activity suggests a similar date and function for many of the features recorded here.

Map

February 2004, Norfolk NMP
Numerous linear, rectilinear and curvilinear ditches, as well as clusters of pits or post holes, are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1) to (S9). Although they do not form a coherent pattern, they all share a location in what was clearly a prehistoric ceremonial landscape, principally of the Neolithic to Bronze Age periods. A proportion of the features, such as the possible pit alignments described below, are likely to be contemporary with this landscape.

Some features are more likely to be associated with the known prehistoric monuments than others. The S shaped ditch, visible between TG 2066 3601 and TG 2061 3587, may form part of the same phase of activity as the possibly Neolithic or Bronze Age curvilinear enclosure at its northern end (NHER 38478). Two ditches, aligned east to west (from TG 2068 3604 to TG 2070 3603 and from TG 2067 3603 to 2070 3602), may continue the line of a trackway to their east (NHER 36481). Possible linear and curvilinear pit or post hole alignments are also visible, such as a northwest to southeast alignment of three pits or post holes (from TG 2053 3586 to TG 2055 3583) between two ring ditches, and a curvilinear alignment of six pits from TG 2057 3592 to TG 2058 3596.
