Summary

An evaluation in 2004 revealed a medieval raised bank aligned with the city walls, although no wall foundations were encountered. A wheel-rutted road running parallel to the bank was also recorded, and is thought to date from the 13th to 18th centuries. Cellars from the post medieval period were also encountered, attesting to the later redevelopment of this area. The evaluation demonstrated that 18th-19th century construction activity in this area had removed any remains of the medieval city walls.

Map

March 2004. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of the car park at Bull Lane, which saw the excavation of three 5m x 1.6m trenches across the line of the City Wall. Contexts 1-125.
The evaluation trenches did not encounter the foundations of the city wall, demonstrating that 18th- and 19th-century construction activity destroyed any remains of the wall in this area. However, the top and south side of a raised bank were recorded and are thought to be associated with the construction of the city wall. A 'way under the walls' was also recorded as a wheel-rutted roadway running parallel to the bank. An 18th-century cellar was also found, and presumably belonged to one of the cottages known to have been built against the city wall. The Victorian development of Queen's Road was particularly visible, and consisted of brick cellars which truncated the top platform of the bank.
