Full Description
March 2004, Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks described below were previously recorded as NHER 13358.
A roughly rectangular enclosure, defined by rather sinuous ditches, is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs (S1-7), centred at TG 2210 3524. It is subdivided by a number of ditches and possibly a trackway (from TG 2211 3530 to TG 2209 3520) and is adjoined at its south-east corner by a series of ditches and perhaps another, smaller enclosure. Two pits or post-holes continue the line of the west side of the postulated track to the north. At its north-west corner, the enclosure abuts a Neolithic causewayed enclosure (this relationship is clearly visible on S6). The fact that its boundaries share an alignment with nearby post-medieval field boundaries, as depicted on historic maps (S8) suggests that it is likely to date to the post-medieval period. Its proximity, however, to an extensive field system of possible Romano-British date (NHER 38499) should be borne in mind.
It should be noted that a large number of linear features are visible as cropmarks on the consulted aerial photographs (S1-7). These lie both within and around the features described above and the majority appear to be post-medieval or modern in date, comprising field boundaries, field drains and other features associated with buildings (Hagon Beck Cottages) and enclosures visible on historic maps (S8-9). The mapped enclosure and associated features appear to conform to the general pattern of these features, except where overlain by field drains.
