NHER 4341 (Cropmark and Earthwork record) - The Mount, Bronze Age bowl barrow

In Ordnance Survey map 1930 edition as 'The Mound' (sic). ?Moot hill of Clackclose Hundred, east of Stradsett Park about 300 yds (274m) from Fincham boundary.

About 20 yds (18m) diam, 65 yds (60m) circumference. Height about 8ft (2.4m). Covered with trees, holly ash and fir. Slightly concave on top but nearly flat and apparently undug except for rabbits. One flake found. No definite ditch but there is a pit on the north side.

A slight mound at north end of wood known locally as Mount Wood is possibly upcast from a large pit to north. Covered with trees and nettles. Not at all convincing as barrow.

Scheduled Monument Listing:
The monument includes a bowl barrow situated on the Greensand Belt to the west of the Fenland. The barrow is visible as a flat topped earthen mound around 1.6m in height and covering a circular area around 22m in diameter. The profile of the mound is roughly symmetrical except on the western side, where the slope is shallower and slightly hollowed, indicating that there has been some disturbance in that area, perhaps caused by a limited excavation. The mound is thought to be encircled by a ditch which has become infilled and is no longer visible, although it will survive as a buried feature. It has been suggested that the barrow was reused as the Moot Hill of Clackclose Hundred.
