Map

1998. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with installation of sewer main.
A number of unstratified finds were recovered from this section of the works, including three prehistoric worked flints and pottery sherds of predominantly post-medieval date.
See report (S1) and correspondence in file for NHER 33750 for further details.
Previously recorded under NHER 33750.

Previously the results of this watching brief were recorded solely under NHER 33750. This record now just details the group of ?medieval pits exposed in a field immediately west of Green Lane West (which were the only sub-surface remains identified). Although a range of unstatified finds were recovered elsewhere it appears that the majority were not accurately located. Those for which an approximate location can be determined from either the report or subsequent correspondence between NLA and the author (see file for NHER 33750) are now recorded separately (such as these objects and a Late Saxon pottery sherd which is now NHER 63459). It should however be noted that the report also mentions a sparse scatter of Roman, medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds, the exact nature and distribution of which is not recorded. It is though noted that the majority of the sherds recovered were post-medieval in date.

Before 1 September 2003. Metal-detecting.
Found in vicinity of [1] (Context 1):
2 medieval coins (short cross penny of Edward I and a halfpenny of Alexander III of Scotland).
See list in file.
A. Rogerson (NLA), 9 October 2003. P. Watkins (HES), 17 June 2019.

This site was extended to the whole field in June 2019, following the addition of information on the finds recovered in 1998 [2].
