Full Description
April 2004. Norfolk NMP
Cropmarks of a ditch defined road or trackway are visible on aerial photographs (S1-3). The cropmarks are intermittent, and extend for 650m on a northeast to southwest alignment between TG38372748 and TG38722803. The road aligns with a bend in the modern 'High Road' at its northeast end and a building was located at its southwest end on the 1840 Lessingham tithe map (S4). A negative cropmark, representing a compacted or metalled surface is present along most of the length of the road. Different sections of the road are visible on photographs of different dates, with the southwest part visible in 1972 (S1), the central section in 1963 (S2) and the northeast part in 1946 (S3). This road is shown on Faden's 1797 Map of Norfolk (S5), but had been replaced by the modern road to its east by the time of Bryant's 1826 map (S6). The NHER map has an annotation stating that it was called 'Peddars Weye' on an 1587 map. This has not been confirmed, but if correct it is likely that the road depicted on the 1587 map is the one shown as cropmarks. The modern High Road to the east of these cropmarks was called 'South Common Road' on the tithe map. Medieval to post medieval pottery and metalwork has been found in the vicinity of the southwest end of this cropmark (NHER 39381).
