Full Description
Photograph in (S1) shows a brick tower windmill in process of demolition in 1940. (S1) suggests that this was the original power for the baked bean factory, founded in 1934. It also states that the area was previously known as Millfields; 1928 25 inch Ordnance Survey map marks a sawmill here, but nothing resembling the windmill. Photograph also shows a chimney that might indicate a steam engine. Later history of factory is given including a 1960s concrete warehouse said to be the largest unsupported roof in Europe; this may be reused elsewhere, otherwise factory closed in 2002.
E. Rose (NLA), 1 December 2003.
